New guest announcement for Grossfest 2019!

0

For our next guest announcement is a pair like no other making independent horror films. They are raw, brutally honest, and have made some films that are absolutely disgusting and beautiful at the same time. The point is their films grab you by the naughty parts and make you pay attention! They may be the most talented duo out there in filmmaking land and have a constantly growing audience.  A lot of people know them as TOE TAG or as I would like to introduce them to the few that haven’t had the pleasure of meeting these talented young people I give you… Fred Vogel and Shelby Lynn Vogel! I believe the picture explains everything…

Gross Movie Reviews #451

Stanley (DVD) – Tim is a peaceful Indian who got drafted into the Vietnam War and is now back home in the everglades just trying to enjoy life his way. He finds peace with snakes he calls friends. Tim is very good at catching poisonous snakes and takes them to some Miami doctors so they can use their venom for anti-venom. But recently some poachers have been killing the snakes off nearby for their skins. Tim and his best friend Stanley the snake doesn’t take kindly to this and begin a fight with the poachers. A very weird early 70s film has that feel of “Frogs” and maybe “Squirm”. This lesser known flick does fit the tone of a “Deathdream” and other flicks of that era for that I give it 2 ½ stars. There is a lot of cool extras also worth tracking this disc down.

Eye of the Devil (DVD) – An old school black and white flick from the 60s that stars Donald Pleasence as the family priest! Do I need to say more? Some rich dude is called back home because the family vineyard is dying and some evil shit needs to go down for the vineyard to thrive again. I give the film 2 stars and Mr. Pleasence 4 stars as usual.

The Killing of Satan (DVD) – Another crazy ass film from the Philippines where a man is chosen to battle evil and eventually Satan. He must defeat Satan for the release of his daughter! The dude’s name is Lando, people are shooting laser beams from their hands and eyes, and apparently there are boulders that weigh less than air being thrown around. I really wanted to enjoy this film but fell asleep twice. I only give the film 1 ½ stars but totally believe this needs to be watched in a setting with beer and a group of people.

The Last Halloween (YouTube) – A lost TV show from NBC that only played once in October 1991. Get this folks the show stars Rhea Perlman, Richard Moll, and had Savage Steve Holland directing. Think of a cut up episode of “Goosebumps” that involves Martians landing in a small town looking for ‘cooby’ aka candy on Halloween night. The appeal of this never knowing it existed like the “Grinch Halloween” as I give this 2 stars.

Tank Girl (DVD) – This 1995 mess of a flick is what feeds the 90s being a bad decade for films. Oh this post-apocalyptic flick is total mess but after reading the bio and other information that has come out about the film over the years this film was a shell of what should have happened. Anyway it is 2033 and several years ago a comet hit Earth and made most of the water dry up. Now, a corporation called “W&P” and run by Malcolm McDowell own what is left of the water and will do anything it takes to ensure that. But Tank Girl or Lori Petty isn’t going to sit idly by it let them take what belongs to the people. Now remember folks this was a comic book movie made before “Guardians of the Galaxy” so studios didn’t give much effort to cult projects such as this or I should allow them to be themselves? I am not a Lori Petty fan but do not see anyone else at that time that would have pulled off the role. Also knowing what I know while watching this flick again it is ashame but it is still a bad movie mess as I give it 1 star. Maybe the project would have had a better chance now than then? Or it just needed the studio to let the crew do their thing… who knows?

Gunhed (VHS) – Here is a random B-movie from Toho Productions that was supposedly a “Godzilla” project in the early stages because of a contest. One thing led to another and it became something else as it set somewhere past 2025 on an island called ‘8-JO’. It is an island that is run by a supercomputer (Kyron-5) that became self-aware and declared war on humanity July 4, 2025. Over a year later the great ‘Robot War’ is still raging and computer chips are the new gold of Earth. Now as a Gunhed battalion launches its last attack on the island thieves are trying to swoop in and gather computer chips. The machines help kill off several characters quickly it’s up to a mechanic, a Texas Ranger, and two kids to stop Kyron-5 from restarting and taking over the world. It’s a Japanese version of the “Terminator” world with a little Full Moon “Robot Wars” thrown in as I give it 3 stars.

The Return of the Vampire (DVD) – A 1943 film that intrigue me for the mere reason it was supposed to be a sequel to 1932’s “Dracula”. It even starred Bela Lugosi as the vampire. Problem was this film was made by Columbia Pictures and the original was made by Universal Studios who were about to unleash some legal kick ass on the company for the project. So Columbia Pictures changed all the characters names including Bela as he was known as Armand Tesla. He is a vampire that haunts a family in 1918 and then believed to be killed and buried. But he is disturbed by a WWII bomb over 20 years later and his stake removed so he can haunt the same family again. Pretty cool vampire stuff worth watching if you are a Lugosi fan and a vamp flick fan as I give it 3 stars.

Leaf Blower Massacre 2 (DVD) – Anthony Cooney has returned with a sequel to his 2012 tribute to “Nailgun Massacre”. This time around it is a full feature not a short but both are now available on the same DVD. The masked killer with a leaf blower has returned and the bodies are piling up. Two detectives are stumped of who could be the murderer until the only conclusion they can come to is that a teacher Mr. Jennings knows them all. Even with Mr. Jennings as the main suspect students are still dying to detectives’ disbelief. The film has three scenes that make this a success in my eyes: leaf blower to the girl’s front garage, the killer with leaf blower wanders through a death metal gig and no questions, and I get my death by nails scene! Mr. Cooney sir I give you 3 ½ out of 4 stars for this greatness.

Cry of the Werewolf (DVD) – There is a legend about a woman named Marie Latour who turned into a wolf and killed her husband years ago. Immediately after she disappeared and has lived among the gypsies as their queen. Now a professor has been researching the legend and may have found the answers they all had been looking for to prove the legend of Marie Latour. So Ms. Latour goes back to her old estate to stop Doctor Morris and along the way may have found new love. But her new love is soon to be married so she turns the fiancée into follower of hers to help protect the legend of the wolf but again kill the soon to be husband. Fun stuff about werewolf movie lure like this film is the first film to feature a woman as a werewolf as I give it 2 ½ stars.

Mutilation Massacre (DVD) – A short film from Derek Braasch about a young woman who goes on a serious murdering spree after her father decides to remarry. The crazy bitch even goes all “Stepfather” and shit and gets facial reconstruction to change her appearance. But a bitter family member is not fooled! Check out Stephanie the serial killer at www.cheeviesfilms.com as I give the short film 2 ½ out of 4 stars.

An Hour to Kill (DVD) – The latest project from independent filmmaker Aaron K. Carter is an anthology that the center pieces are hitmen. Gio – a grizzled vet and Frankie – the newbie are working together but the boss Mr. Kinski believes there is a leak within the organization. The boss gives Gio the new job and wants it done in an hour. So the two drive to a location for the hit and share horror stories: one features five women and a Nazi bunker, a second story about a prank gone wrong, third story about what you got to do to make the bowling team? And of course the wrap around are the two hitmen and their boss. A well-rounded, entertaining, and no weak parts in this anthology from Rotten Productions that made me laugh quite a few times as I give it 3 out of 4 stars.

The Bray Road Beast Becomes an Indie Film Success Story

0

“You’re Next” director, Adam Wingard hails new horror doc director as the “Ken Burns of scary documentaries”

The latest release from indie film company, Small Town Monsters, takes an investigative look into encounters with a wolflike creature near the town of Elkhorn, WI during the early 90s. Titled, The Bray Road Beast, the film also uncovers a history of sightings of similar creatures around the world. Speaking with local witnesses, investigators and government officials who investigated the sightings, director, Seth Breedlove was able to unlock a multitude of possible unnerving stories as well as likely explanations; from misidentified bear to underground satanic cults.

The Bray Road Beast premiered at HorrorHound Indianapolis and took honors at Hot Springs International Horror Film Festival. It will continue to play the film festival circuit throughout the Fall and into next year. The documentary was released on streaming platforms such as Amazon, Vimeo OnDemand and VIDI Space and within 48 hours had ascended to the top 20 best selling new released on Amazon. It currently sits as the number #2 new release movie in Horror (ahead of Mandy, Ghost Stories and Hereditary) and #2 movie in the documentary genre. Ahead of the official release it has seen acclaim from Blair Witchdirector Adam Wingard who said “The Bray Road Beast solidifies Seth Breedlove as the Ken Burns of scary, cryptozoological documentaries” while web journalist, Adam Benedict proclaimed the film “equal parts Unsolved Mysteries, drive-in creature feature, real life Grimm’s Fairy Tale and a midwestern look at the “satanic panic” of the late 80’s and early 90’s” before giving it a five-star rating.

“Bray Road” was funded through a Kickstarter campaign launched early this year and was made for under twelve thousand dollars.

The Bray Road Beast reunites the Small Town Monsters crew of director, Seth Breedlove, cinematographer, Zac Palmisano, sound designer, Jason Utes, and composers Brandon Dalo (The Mothman of Point Pleasant) and Chris Dudley (Underoath) with author and musician, Lyle Blackburn who will narrate the film. Blackburn previously narrated the Small Town Monsters productions, The Mothman of Point Pleasant and Boggy Creek Monster. Mark Matzke co-writes while Adrienne Breedlove acts as a producer. The titular “beast” will appear onscreen in dramatic, animated sequences, as well as live-action recreations with a number of different creature designs by Chris Scalf and Santino Vitale.

Small Town Monsters has already begun work on their “Bray Road” followup, Terror in the Skies which investigates sightings of the Mothman in Chicago.

Gross Movie Reviews #450

Mr. Cleaver (DVD) – A throwback S.O.V. flick where some punks break into an empty warehouse to party their brains. Things are going great: people are trippy, bumping uglies, and just being drunk until a bad dude with a giant meat cleaver shows up to ruin the party. Crystal, Lump, and friends get real scared when they find Mr. Cleaver’s personal pile of body parts. The punks fight back but run into trouble when they find out the evil dude cannot be killed because the warehouse is his own personal hell for eternity. Some blood, some nostalgia as these flicks will always hit the soft spot in my heart as I give it 2 ½ out of 4 stars. For more details or to purchase the film, go check out www.togethermagicfilmgroup.com .

Ghost Stories (DVD) – A British film that could be considered anthology but really doesn’t feel like it. But that can be up for a debate between you and your friends after watching it. Professor Goodman is a man that makes a living at trying to debunk the supernatural or just trying to prove psychics are just good cheats. Professor Goodman is contacted by an old man. This old man isn’t just any person but someone when Goodman was young he caught on T.V. debunking the supernatural. Goodman goes to the man’s trailer because this was his idol; here is his chance to talk to him. But the old man had his reasons for calling Goodman to him. The old man hands off three cases that the old man claims were real. They couldn’t be explained logically and wants Goodman to either prove him wrong or to tell him that the supernatural does exist? But pay close attention folks because every scene has a point and the payoff is how the film ends. I give the fun film full of hauntings 3 stars.

Strike Commando (VHS) – Found another classic from Vincent Dawn aka Bruno Mattei where this 1987 film stars Reb Brown as Sgt. Michael Ransom as this is Mr. Dawn’s version of “Rambo II” if it was made in the Philippines. The film has a few titles but another popular used title was “Cobra Force”. Yes there is a sequel but no Reb Brown. Anyway Ransom is double crossed when he is in North Vietnam trying to help out a group of people out of the war zone. But when the Russians show up things get serious like some awesome slow motion fire-bombing of Sgt. Ransom. Now with Ransom captured behind enemy lines and no one to save him the Russians try to turn him against his own. Ransom won’t have any of it, escapes, kills most of everyone, the guy that double crossed him went to Manila. So we get this added on scene with Ransom and bootleg Col. Troutman in Manila and a large machine gun! 2 ½ stars people for this awesome badness!

For the Love of Spock (DVD) – A wonderful documentary about Leonard Nimoy by his son Adam who documents the impact the famous “Star Trek” character had on pop culture and people over the years. Leonard was a struggling actor in Hollywood who like most worked odd jobs and almost quit completely until he landed the role of Spock. At first wasn’t totally known where this character would go or do in the series but Leonard found his calling and loved every second of it. His image was everywhere and still till this day is reference on a regular on TV shows. The person and the character were someone that was loved and appreciated by almost all. His son even documents the hard times as a kid growing up with your dad being Spock. Great stuff as I give it 4 stars.

Power of Grayskull: The Definitive History of He-Man and the Masters of the Universe (DVD) – This might be a very nerdy documentary but I lived it. This documentary covers everything He-man related. It all starts with how they basically produced the He-man toy line out of thin air after losing out on the “Star Wars” toys. No real back story they came up with a good guy and a bad guy and went from there. With no TV show or movie these action figures sold like crazy to the point Mattel couldn’t keep up with demand and were making up characters as they went. At the height of its popularity it was 95% of the toy business in some form. The cartoon that was soon developed was also in such high demand they came up with “She-ra” which proved to be just as popular. He-man was the thing from 1982-1987 and believe me I lived it as I remember trying to write letters to Mattel to try and get free action figures. Once the Dolph Lundgren film was released that seem to sign the end for the toy line. There were a couple restarts over the years but no luck until recently with nerds taking over the Earth He-man has found new life. If you are about the same age as me you will remember He-man mania as the film documents everything… I give it 4 stars.

City Limits (DVD) – Okay folks, this lesser known post-apocalyptic film is so in my wheelhouse! This 1984 film stars John Stockwell, Rae Dawn Chong, James Earl Jones, Robbie Benson, Kim Cattrell, and Don Opper (he wrote the script) among some other names. This movie literally looks like they made this film with leftover movies on a shoestring budget and it worked. In 1984, a plague has hit killing almost all adults and leaving kids to fend for themselves. 15 years has past and now the kids or survivors of this plague run the cities with no power. John Stockwell as Lee heads to the city for adventure to look for a group of survivors known as the “Clippers”. Clippers are a motorcycle gang that has split the dark city with the “DA’s”. The gangs have made peace for years now so they would stop killing each other and just try to survive. But a corporation has moved in and is trying to force the gangs to be a part of the system of rebuilding. If they do not cooperate with the Sunya Corp. they will be killed. With Lee finding these new friends he wants to help them fight for the city and keep it from the adults trying to move in. This movie is absolutely cheesy wonderfulness! I give this mid-80s gem 4 stars all the way!

Well this happened: Let’s just get right down to it because there aren’t enough words to express how cool this is! This man needs no introduction as his makeup work says it all. But he has carved out an amazing career as an actor and a director also. He has inspired generations to do makeup and effects. Kids are still inspired by the amazing work he has done in the effects world. Some of his work is shown off in “Dawn of the Dead”, “Friday the 13th”, and “Creepshow”. To this day I feel he did amazing work directing “Night of the Living Dead 1990”, but also was hilarious in such projects “From Dusk till Dawn” and “Machete”. He is truly the man, the myth, the legend, Tom Savini! We welcome Tom in joining our guest list for Grossfest 2019. www.grossfest.com #grossfest , #grossfest2019 , see yinz there!

An Australian horror film being released to haunt you!

0

La Vergne, Tennessee (Monday, October 1st, 2018) – 3rd Night is a horror film from Australia. Shot by up-and-coming director Adam Graveley (“Killer Experience”), the film brings two poachers to a remote home. Here, the newly married Jonathan (Robert Hartburn, Hidden Light) and Megan Reid (Jesse McGinn, Broken Contract) are terrorized in their new farmhouse. Is there any way to escape? 3rd Night also stars: Bruce Denny (Death Bet) and Connor Gosatti (Midnight Ticket). And, Monarch Home Entertainment will show the film, for the first time, on DVD in the U.S. market. More details on the October 9th, 2018 release are hosted here.

Director and graphic designer Graveley won the Neville Brody’s International FUSE competition, for design. His story, heavy on pastoral imagery, is set in Western Australia. Over three nights, Jonathan and Megan are subjected to unimaginable terrors. Stalked, chased and spied upon, this couple’s dream of a quiet life is destroyed by those who wish to keep their illicit pursuits hidden.

3rd Night is a 2D Films and Meld Film Studio production. Of 72 minutes, 3rd Night will be released in an unrated version, so Graveley’s true horror vision can be seen by audiences. Released in Australia in 2017, horror fans in the U.S. can see Graveley’s first feature, on DVD, this October 9th!
