Gross Movie Reviews reads a book… again!

By Tim Gross

This time around it’s a book project I have been waiting a couple years for. The book is “Exploring the Underground: The Mainstream Viewer’s Guide to Low Budget Horror Cinema” from writer/fellow film lover Mario Dominick. The project has been at least four years in the making reason I have been waiting so long and remember having conversations with Mario about doing a book. But Mario wanted to do something different, something that isn’t talked about much or I should say followed as close as maybe mainstream film, but also something weird people unlike Mario and me would easily understand and get the idea. So Mario who may be the biggest fan of independent film I have ever met made it his goal to sit down and interview quite a few of the popular, possibly unknown, and groundbreaking filmmakers who are behind these no budget underground films and their companies. Mario goes into great depth with their projects, scripts, characters, etc. hoping to give even the most mainstream film viewer a peak behind the curtain of what it is like to be an independent filmmaker and their passion for it. Mario takes you deep inside the mind of people like Fred Vogel from Toe Tag Pictures, Mike and Amy Watt (Lynn Best) from Happy Cloud Pictures, Chris Seaver of the now defunct Low Budget Pictures, and Bill Zebub from Bill Zebub Productions and many more. And Mario’s writing style allows even the most jaded film fan to enjoy the structure of the 458 page book. You don’t have to read it in order as the book is structured to allow you the reader to skip around chapters if you like? But Mario not only tries to educate you about these very talented people but hopes you will think twice and maybe show a little support by giving their projects a second look. Mario Domnick’s book is absolutely brilliant! Be proud my friend as I already started reading the book again and believe I have even more respect if possible for independent film and the people behind it… and for that I give this must have book 4 out of 4 stars.

You can purchase the book through Toe Tag Pictures website: www.toetag.biz

Gross Movie Reviews Presents: The Out of Print Room

Tim Gross has hand picked the film schedule at Horror Realm on Friday & Saturday.  And yes, it includes Spookies.  Films will be screened in the Embassy Room.

Friday

  • 5:00pm – “Bloodsucking Pharaohs in Pittsburgh” – A killer is loose in Pittsburgh and he is taking a body part with every kill in this unbelievably funny but bloody, low-budget flick that nobody wanted to claim too.
  • 7:00pm – “The Resurrected” – A weird movie loosely based on a H.P. Lovecraft story that just happens to star Chris Sarandon.
  • 9:05pm – “Red Christmas” – Steve Rudzinski gives fans something different every time out and may have given independent gorehounds a holiday present that will keep on giving for years to come!
  • 11:00pm – “Hard to Die” – A Jim Wynorski produced lost classic that was also known as “Sorority House Massacre 3” about three women trapped in the mall’s lingerie store.
  • 12:35am – “The Tomb” – The film is about a grave robber who steals an artifact from a tomb and sells it and now has the evil vampire (Michelle Bauer) controlling him in order to retrieve the artifact.

Saturday

  • 10:00am – “The Quest” – A very cool Aussie film from 1986 that blends Monster Squad, Goonies, and several other mid-80s films that were popular with the ‘E.T.’ kid!
  • 12:00pm – “Body Count” – The film is about a camping ground that is haunted by an Indian spirit that kills whoever camps there. Stars David Hess.
  • 2:00pm – “Spookies” – Two separate films mixed together that was originally titled “Twisted Souls” and has enough monsters and craziness that blows most horror fan’s minds!
  • 4:00pm – “13 Score” – In 1753 along a lake shore in western Pennsylvania, a group of inhabitants became stark raving lunatics and murdered one another for no apparent reason. 260 years later, it’s happening again.  Winner of the 2014 Horror Real Independent Film Festival Best Feature Film, Best Screenplay and Audience Choice Awards.
  • 6:00pm – “The Axeman of Henderson County” – A small town is terrorized by an axe-wielding serial killer in this campy, tongue in cheek thriller/comedy.  Featuring “Hacksaw” Jim Duggan and Major Harris.
  • 8:00pm – “Split Second” – The man, the myth, the legend Rutger Hauer is an officer of the law trying to track down an unnatural serial killer in a flooded futuristic London.
  • 10:00pm – “Curse of the Blue Lights” – An unknown low budget zombie flick from the late 80s that spent all its money on zombie make-up and none on sets and actors.
  • 12:00am – “Wild Beasts” – Another killer animal film that was not only made in Italy but involves a whole fucking zoo that has the animals going crazy because they are all on PCP.

Sunday schedule to be announced.

This week Kyle and Tim dust off a couple of Shot on Video gems from the old mom and pop video stores.  And those 2 flicks are VIDEO VIOLENCE 1 and 2.  And we also tackle your listener questions and go over what we’ve been watching lately.  NOTE: Kyle is an internet dummy and lost his review of whatever flick he was watching for the week, BUT, in his searching he found our long lost CRITTERS RETROSPECTIVE.  So come back in a few days and it will be posted.

Superheroes have invaded film more in the past decade and a half than they have in their entire history. Also included are a multitude of animated features, superhero movies that didn’t quite hit at the box office, pulp heroes and more. Look, Up on the Screen! is a collection of reviews for the serious superhero filmgoer from a diehard fan who’s seen nearly all of what the superhero motion picture field has to offer. Whether your theatre is at the cineplex or in your own home, this is one collection that’s a must-add to your bookshelf of behind-the-scenes goodies, movie guides, superhero film novelizations and graphic novels. Check out “Winter Legend” from a first time author!!!

0

Virgil has always had a knack for finding things – an excellent journalist trait. As the victim of a society that seems far too easily swayed by impressively white teeth, and equally impressive cleavage, Virgil finds himself out of work, and homeless. Desperate for a commission, he accepts an assignment to write a “fluff piece” about the current winter holiday, and its remarkably attractive character. There’s journalistic integrity, and then there’s reality. The man has to eat, you know.
Always the astute investigator, Virgil attacks his assignment with his usual, obsessive zeal. But he quickly discovers that the new holiday’s “bringer of gifts” has no origins, no background. And absolutely nothing seems to explain why she dresses in tight, revealing clothing. Intrigued, he decides to dive deep into the murky waters of the past, to a time when society celebrated a holiday called Christmas. His research uncovers something shocking: Christmas has been completely erased from history!
Virgil becomes obsessed with the long-forgotten myth, thus beginning his epic, global quest to find the Winter Legend.

Info about the first time author:

E.S. Brtko was born just outside of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Always the creative type, he discovered a love of music and writing at a very early age. At age 10 he began playing the trumpet, but quickly moved to saxophone. By the time he had reached 16 years of age, Mr. Brtko had taught himself to play several musical instruments. However, his love of writing flourished during his later years of high school, and soon, it became his main focus. He won the coveted Quill and Scroll Award for Journalism twice, and has been published in several magazines.
Mr. Brtko spent the greater part of his early adulthood living in different cities and states, sometimes living out of his repurposed, old, hockey equipment bag. This period fed his adventurous and creative inclinations. He has worked a variety of different jobs – including Sales Manager, Professional Piano Player, and Corporate Trainer. Mr. Brtko published his first novel, “Winter Legend”, in 2014. He has now returned to Pittsburgh, his city of birth, where he lives with his wife and son.
