0

Horror Realm, Pittsburgh’s modern horror convention, is pleased to announce that the Spring Break Massacre returns for a full weekend in 2014.

The show will be March 7 to 9 at the Crowne Plaza Pittsburgh South.  Discounted room rates will be available; details will be released soon.

We are now accepting dealer registrations for the spring show.  The registration form with table rates and payment options is attached.  All tables are $125 (with a discount for multiples).  Wall space is limited and will be placed on a first paid, first placed basis.

This is our second year of a full weekend in the spring and while we are growing, we do not expect the same level of attendance as our fall show.  As a result, we are limiting the number of tables available to 50 to ensure fair sales competition and variety.  Our tables have consistently sold out so if you want a space, please complete the agreement and return with payment as soon as possible.

We can also offer sponsorship packages at various levels and costs to provide additional exposure for your business both on-site at the convention and through our pre-show promotional efforts using our proprietary horror fan mailing list, social media subscriber contacts, media press releases and collateral materials.  Benefits provided to sponsors can include naming rights, complimentary exhibit space and admissions, web site promotion, etc.  Please contact Sandy Stuhlfire at info@horrorrealmcon.com to inquire about sponsorship opportunities.

If you can’t attend but would like to promote your business at Horror Realm, please contact us to discuss options such as donating prizes or giveaways, web advertising, etc.

Horror Realm is a small but growing convention with a reputation for being a fun, fan-friendly event with a relaxed and welcoming vibe.  Attendance has grown with the favorable word of mouth of our patrons, dealers and guests who have enjoyed our shows.  We offer some different and unusual programming, events, contests and parties to attract attendees.   The show will feature the dealer room, VHS viewing room, film festival, panels, events, entertainment and the return of our Zombie Gras party.

We are working on guest contracts and will have announcements soon.

If you have any questions, please contact Sandy at info@horrorrealmcon.com.   Thank you!

Todd E. Freeman Reveals the Short Film “M is for Marriage” for the ABC’s of Death 2 Film Competition

1

Portland, Oregon – Polluted Pictures (Cell Count) and Lyon Films (The Tell) are proud to announce their new film “M is for Marriage” is now available for viewing on the ABC’s of Death 2 film competition page. This competition will select the 26th director and film for the upcoming horror title ABC’s of Death 2.

“M is for Marriage” is a peek into the world of our next feature film “Love Sick.” Writer and director Todd E. Freeman says: “that being said, it never would have been made unless the competition to find the 26th director for ABC’s of Death 2 had been announced at the exact time it was. “Love Sick” is a very personal project that is based in a very real time in my life when I wasn’t sure if I was going to be with the woman that I loved until the day I died. On one hand this is very much an examination of love and the physical/emotional pain that comes from it. On the other bigger hand… well… it’s a badass gore filled monster movie!”

Official synopsis: “M is for Marriage” is about Dr. Christian, who has been a therapist for 15 years, and he is the foremost expert in the controversial field of Bio-Medical Psychotherapy. His most recent case involves a husband and wife who are looking for either closure or a path back toward healing. Their stress has hit a critical stage and must be confronted in what Dr. Christian calls a Bio-Transference session. This 3 minute peek will show that session.

“M is for Marriage” stars actress Natalie Victoria (Deadheads) and Jeffree Newman.

The ABCS of Death 2 competition decides the top 12 films in two ways: six will be chosen by Public Vote and the other six will be selected via a panel of genre aficionados made up of ABCs Of Death producers: Tim League and Ant Timpson, Associate Producer Ted Geoghegan, Horror-Movie-A-Day Founder Brian Collins, Entertainment Weekly Senior Editor Clark Collis, author Grady Hendrix, and Fangoria Managing Editor Michael Gingold. These lucky finalists will then go on to the final judging round, where the sequel’s 25 other directors – esteemed names such as Alex De La Iglesia, Bill Plympton, Vincenzo Natali, The Twisted Twins, and Julien Maury and Alexandre Bustillo – will select the final winner to be included in ABCs of Death 2 film..

Gross Movie Reviews #303

By Tim Gross

More Brains! A Return to the Living Dead (DVD) – Another great documentary about a horror film that is a favorite of many horror fans. But this isn’t just any horror film the documentary covers… it’s the zombie film that changed everything about zombies. Just like 1968s ‘Night of the Living Dead’, ‘Return of the Living Dead’ caught everyone by surprise in the mid-80s by introducing zombies wanting brains, zombies talk, and be a new kind of entertainment. This documentary tracks down all who were involved and learns of how it all came together and how no one exactly knew that this zombie film would take the next step in zombie film evolution. A must see for all as I give it 4 stars.

Infinte Santa

Infinte Santa 8000 (DVD) – What once started as a webisodes project from Michael Neel and Greg Ansin after their awesome independent anthology ‘Drive-in Horrorshow’ has now become a feature length animated film after two long years of hard work. And I am here to say the hard work paid off in this beautiful animated feature that features a Robo Santa a world that is far into a war torn future! This is the type of film that makes me wonder if the filmmakers behind it reach into a horror fan’s dark soul and bring to life something of the likes of Robo Santa. The film has a great and entertaining beginning that sets the pace for you the viewer of knowing what your brain is about to witness as Robo Santa is facing off a full robot in a bootleg Thunderdome. And they are fighting for meat as meat is scarce and the new money with the world looking like one big wasteland straight out of a ‘Mad Max’ film. But as Santa goes back to the North Pole with his Robo reindeer he knows he is going back to the one person who still believes. And her name is Martha. Martha is what keeps the old man going. But there is some who want to take that away from him and the menace that wants to take the happiness away is the “Creator” who made Martha. The Creator sends an evil bunny with exploding peeps, monkey men, and mutations, even Martha clones to kill Santa and steal Martha away only to destroy her for good. It is a holiday classic of good versus evil in this animated feature that is complete chaotic fun! It is not only one of the best independent films of the year but I am glad to say one my favorite horror films in the past few years. The dedication of Michael Neel and all who are involved with Burnt Reindeer Films should be proud of their project that I would put up there with the likes of ‘Heavy Metal’, ‘Fire and Ice’. What sealed the deal on this great film was the quote from Robo Santa in the film, “Just how I like my mutants, ugly, crispy, and dead!” That is perfection for me. Horror movie fans if there is one horror film you buy this holiday season it must be “Infinite Santa 8000” or Robo Santa and myself are coming Mad Max style down your chimney and throwing you in the bootleg Thunderdome! I give the film 4 out of 4 stars and it can be found at www.midnightreleasing.com and more info about Greg and others can be found at www.infinitesanta.com . If you need more look for the intentional or unintentional video game Gauntlet scene during the big fight between Robo Santa and Creator’s minions.

Eureka (DVD) – An odd Rutger Hauer film from 1983 that also stars Gene Hackman, Ed Lauter, Mickey Rouke, Joe Pesci, and Joe Spinell! But what Rutger Hauer film isn’t a bit odd as most of his career choices always make you think. But Gene Hackman is a man who searched for gold for 15 years during the time of the gold rush finally finding after a very weird encounter with a woman who helps tell his future. Years later and Hackman’s character now owning an island and more money than can be printed finds himself feeling like his world is falling apart as Rutger Hauer is taking his daughter away, people want his island, and they want to kill him. Weird but a fun watch for Rutger Hauer fans as I give it 2 stars.

8213: Gacy House (DVD) – A found footage film about Ghost Hunters investigating a vacant home in March 2006. The home is supposed to be where Gacy’s old house was. They even say in the opening credits that the original home was destroyed in 1979 I believe and a new home was built there. But during the film during the so-called investigation the ghost hunters talk about the old house, wiring, etc. This is the type of film that just gives paranormal experts a bad name hell if I was a ghost hunter I would be insulted by this big piece of elephant shit! I give it 0 stars.

Ridge War

Ridge War Z (DVD) – An independent zombie film that takes entirely different approach but at the same time trying to cash in on the similar title of Brad Pitt’s project. A reporter tracks down three soldiers who survived a battle with zombies to protect a ridge and write a book on it. The filmmaker Alek Gearhart takes the approach of the reporter helping the soldiers get over the evil events that happened and to relive some of the horrible events to make their lives better and help him to write his book based on the events. The filmmaker dedicates the film to all veterans who were in a war as tries to use this dramatic approach to show how tough it can be for vets to live with the burden of war and the decisions made during the battles. It’s different, a little talky at times but I gotta give credit to the filmmaker doing something very different with the zombie genre. I give the film 2 ½ out of 4 stars and can be found at www.braindamagefilms.com .

Amnesiac (DVD) – A foreign independent film that tries to outsmart the viewer by over thinking the plot and just confusing the shit out of me by the end of the film. The film begins with two sisters and the one’s boyfriend Thom going all ‘Witchboard’ with an Ouija board by doing a séance to contact a spirit. But as the three get more involved in the spirit’s world as things go weird to the point that the film becomes about the spirit who killed people in a past life but is now haunted by the people who were contacting him through the board… maybe? All I know this film my head hurt and it got boring as the filmmaker over thought the plot. I give the independent film 0 out of 4 stars and you can find it at www.midnightreleasing.com .

The Man with the Iron Fists (DVD) – A film that steals a bunch of random Asian Cinema and smashes it into a crazy action film to pimp RZA! It’s not bad, it’s not good, and it’s just one of those films that are a little too much over the top. I give it 2 stars.

Daisy Derkins, Dogsitter of the Damned! (DVD) – Daisy has just gotten a part time job being a dog sitter for a very strange dude in a black robe. But he gives Daisy permission to do pretty much anything she wants as long as she keeps an eye out for the dog. Bad move Ex-Lax! Daisy invites two friends over who want to get Daisy high and drunk and bullshit about the guy who is stalking her after one date. Once they are about to enter the point of no return in drunken terms Daisy hears a voice or laughter, causing the friends to call paranormal expert/pinup model Delia to find the issue and film it for her cable access show. If that wasn’t enough to scare Daisy her stalker comes to the house to sing to her, a witch begins to fuck with them, and a serial killer who looks like a bootleg combo of Dimebag Darryl and John Carl Buechler killing everyone in the house, and we have a wendigo that tries to rape the paranormal expert/pinup model. This all happens just because the strange dude parties with a Mexican wrestler and just needed to feed his dog the Dogsitter. Big boobs, blood, woman with tattoos and a Mexican wrestler… I was entertained. I give the independent flick 2 ½ out of 4 stars.

0

Hello Trick ‘r Treaters,

Writer and special effects supervisor Tim Allison has partnered with Rich Robinson (“The Graveyard Feeder”) to produce a short zombie styled film, called “Lynchfield.” Allison has already developed a series of webisodes for “Lynchfield,” which will be used to create a short film set in the same cinemascape. More details on the upcoming short film are hosted below:

Lynchfield

“Lynchfield”

“When There’s No More Room in Hell…You Still Have to Pay the Bills.”

Director Rich Robinson (The Graveyard Feeder) has started pre-production on the horror short “Lynchfield.” Writer/Creator Tim Allison has already developed a series of webisodes for “Lynchfield,” titled “The Lynchfield Stops” and the short film will continue the story of The Driver (Tim Allison), a delivery truck driver moving parcels in the middle of a zombie apocalypse. Allison has recently started a crowdfunding campaign for “Lynchfield” and horror fans can preview the film’s launch here.

The story for “Lynchfield” begins with Hell on Earth and a zombie apocalypse. Even in a ZA, the bills have to be paid. This is one of the challenges for The Driver, who must also outmanoeuvre and plow through the undead, to reach his delivery destinations. Along the way, The Driver encounters the citizens of Lynchfield, who are still going about their business, in the middle of a global catastrophe. One part Clerks (1994) and one part Dawn of the Dead (2004), horror fans can watch the main character as he delivers packages and death one machete stroke at a time!

Readers are encouraged to have a look at the early production material for “Lynchfield.” Several webisodes are available for the upcoming film. As well, film fans can support Allison’s upcoming short film by contributing to the Indiegogo campaign for “Lynchfield,” at the link below.

Gross Movie Reviews #302

Age of Dinosaurs (SyFy Channel/DVD) – Treat Williams plays an out of work L.A. firefighter trying to connect with his teenage daughter. So what better way to connect than to take her to a theater where Robocop’s Ronny Cox just happens to have his own Jurassic Park on stage? He is trying to sell the dinosaurs will help in the long run for burn victims, etc.  For the love of god movie fans this is the same guy who made sure Murphy had a Fourth Directive… So you can’t trust this dude. The film may look somewhat crappy but does deliver in gallons of blood and unintentional laughs so I give it 2 stars.

The Odd Angry Shot (Blu-ray) – Synapse Films dug this war relic out of thin air as I never heard of such a title. But it’s the Australian version of ‘Platoon’ several years before it and not as much Hollywood dramatics to it. But this Australian Vietnam film depicts it wasn’t easy for Bryan Brown and other Aussies during a horrible war that some are still trying to forget also. The film mainly centers on a man who left home for the war and changes during the course of the film as his friends die or go home and his girlfriend breaks up with him in a letter. In the end he is a broken man trying to figure out what goes on next. I know if my dad was still living he would embrace this film as many of the older generations gravitate towards war films. For me it was intriguing because you usually only see America’s take on the Vietnam War. The Blu-ray has a fun stunt featurette and a commentary. You can check out more details on this film at www.synapse-films.com as I give it 2 ½ out of 4 stars.

Ragin’ Cajun Redneck Gators (SyFy Channel/DVD) – Imagine a modern day Hatfield and McCoys feud in Louisiana and one of them has been dumping their shine into the swamps the past six months and it has affected the local gators. To the point they grow bigger, they are red, and if they happen to bite you, you become a mutant gator also. The only hope is what’s left of the two sides to put their feud to the side and stop the mutations before it’s too late. Like ‘Robo Gator’ it was fun for the first 45, 60 minutes but it then seemed like they stretch this outrageous idea a little too far. But I will always enjoy the PS3 Mortal Kombat gator sequence that happens between the one girl’s boyfriend and father who just happen to be gators by ¾ the way in the film! I give the flick 1 ½ stars.

The Salute of the Jugger (VHS) – A much underrated and somewhat unknown Australian/American production that combines 80s TV show American Gladiators and Rugby in a post-apocalyptic world. And they just happen to play with dog skulls… Apparently the dog skull has some significance in the future. And the name Jugger is the name of the warriors who take part in this barbaric sport. And none other than Rutger Hauer is a former big city Jugger who now roams the wastelands with his handpicked team to win dog skulls, get drunk and laid afterwards. But when his dog comes up lame he allows a young Asian woman with spirit join and he takes her to the big time to prove a point to those who banned him from the sport and big city. The film is very violent, has Rutger Hauer, and it has Delroy Lindo, I demand this film should have a special DVD release for all the nerds like myself to enjoy as I give it 4 stars.

Demon

Demon (DVD) – Bodies begin to pile up in some local swamplands in this independent feature where the victims are bloodless and not only the FBI shows up to investigate but an odd couple of scientists who know a little too much of why bodies are piling up. FBI agent Diaz spends most of the film running into dead ends and more bodies until the bootleg Sleestak creature finally shows itself and Diaz learns the creature is actually a genetic experiment.  Filmmaker Rob Walker crafts an interesting creature film that should have spent more time in the editing process before distribution as too much shaky-cam at the wrong times and poor sound quality take away from a descent concept of an independent creature film. I give the film 1 ½ out of 4 stars and more details about the film can be found at http://www.braindamagefilms.com  .

Layout 1

Beast: A Monster Among Men (DVD) – A horror film with a misleading trailer and cover but for good reason as this covers up a well-crafted dramatic thriller about friends and supposedly friends go camping in the mountains on August 4, 2009. Only to completely disappear and very little clues of what happened the next day when authorities investigated. The story has layers as one man; Ely has history with the other friends and is not well-liked. You get some information on why but not all that keeps you at the edge of your seat and suck you into the film as what you believe happen doesn’t happen or did it as Ely wonders into the woods. His best friend Bill chases after only to be followed what sounds like a woman screaming minutes later. From there friends decide to go searching the woods at the dead of night blaming Ely but not knowing the real truth behind the screams, the bloody bodies, and the odd sounds heard throughout the night. I enjoyed this independent feature for the mere fact it was willing to take a chance on making the viewer ultimately decide what actually happens when the film ends leaving it open without leaving it open… Very clever as I give the film 3 out of 4 stars and can be found at www.braindamagefilms.com .

Chernobyl Diaries (DVD) – An interesting film concept as it tries to tackle the subject of Chernobyl. Interesting in the fact since disaster happened in the mid-80s I have always found it very interesting what would happen with the fallout. So when the trailers hit YouTube and TV the film had my attention until I heard what the film was actually. But anyway six people take an extreme tour with their tour guide Uri who just happens to be former Special Forces and has done this for the past five years. The tour consists of going into the small town near Chernobyl that was evacuated years ago never to be populated again and leave before nightfall because of the radiation. As Uri puts it nature has reclaimed the land. But after a bear almost mauls the group in one building and a few other weird things go on, the group tries to leave only of course the van won’t start. When Uri goes to investigate a noise or a possible person at night stuck in the van that is when the film really gets going with possibly mutants eating people, killer dogs tracking down the group, and the radiation starting to get worse and affecting the group. Spoiler alert: Only to be disappointed by the strange things are escaped mental patients. They didn’t just hint at it, they just basically said fuck it here is your ending! Deal with it! This movie concept works really well until the filmmaker just decides they just don’t fucking care how it ends. So good concept, disappointing result! Thank you for wasting my time Hollywood, I give it 1 ½ stars.

Enter the Ninja (DVD) – Franco Nero is in the Far East to study to be a ninja. Once he passes the test he goes to visit a friend in Manila where his friend and wife are being scared off their land by some underlings of a big business man played by Christopher George. From there Nero begins a rampage of crazy ninja death for the next 90 or so minutes. No Nero then we do not have Dudikoff? The film is dated (1981) but still a lot of fun to watch as that small crazy kid inside of you enjoys ninjas fighting to the death. Nero plays an awesome American Ninja that I give 3 stars too.
